"definition": "Artful Ending (ḥusn al-intihāʾ) is an Arabic rhetorical device where the concluding portion of a speech, poem, or prose passage is crafted with particular care so that it is sweet in wording (ʿadhb al-lafẓ), well-cast (ḥasan al-sabk), and sound in meaning (ṣaḥīḥ al-maʿnā).[1][2] Nābulsī similarly defines ḥusn al-khitām as concluding a poem, sermon, or epistle with the finest meaning upon which it is appropriate to stop.[3]\nThe concluding segment is what remains with the listener after the discourse is complete, and is therefore treated as the part most deserving of refinement. Ibn Rashīq al-Qayrawānī describes the ending as the qāʿidat al-qaṣīda, the foundation of the poem — the last thing remaining in the ear — which should be so tightly formed that nothing could be added to it.[2]",

He expanded the scope of the device to encompass any ending — verse or prose — including both the qāfiya and the fāṣila.[5]\nIbn Rashīq reports that al-Qazwīnī concurred in prescribing that the speaker attend to three positions in the discourse: the opening (al-ibtidāʾ), the transition (al-takhallus), and the ending (al-intihāʾ) — the last being what settles in the ear and takes up residence in the nafs.[2]\nJarmānūs Farḥāt defines براعة الختام as the poet ending the qaṣīda on the best possible verse (aḥsan bayt yuḥsin al-sukūt ʿalayhi) — the verse that the listener's memory retains and that gives the whole poem the quality of a fortress (kal-ḥiṣn lil-qaṣīda), such that anything following it would be a weakening.[6]\nEncyclopedia Interpretation\nIn this encyclopedia, the mechanism may be described as operating through two complementary principles identifiable across the sources:\n\nFormal excellence: the final segment is held to a higher standard of wording, rhythm, and construction than the body of the text — it must be compact, well-cast, and incapable of improvement by addition.\nPsychological calibration: the ending is timed and phrased so as to stop at the rhetorically effective point, avoiding superfluous continuation — whether by leaving the nafs still eager, as in Ibn Rashīq's formulation, or leaving no desire for anything further, as in Nābulsī's formulation.",
