"definition": "Foregrounding and Backgrounding (التقديم والتأخير) is an Arabic rhetorical device where a constituent of an utterance is deliberately placed earlier or later than its default position in the sentence, this reordering being undertaken not as an arbitrary feature of composition but for a specific rhetorical purpose (dāʿin).[1][2]\nFrom the sources\nIt is that speech is composed of words or parts that cannot all be uttered at a single instant; some parts must necessarily precede others in pronunciation.[1][2] No word is, in itself, more entitled to precedence than another, since all words are equal in status as lafẓ (linguistic form); therefore, the precedence of one part over another requires a motive (dāʿin) that necessitates it.[1] Nasif (n.d.) and Atiq (n.d.) further specify that word order in an utterance may reflect the order of the corresponding meanings (al-maʿānī) in the mind, but that this ordering may also differ between one speaker and another, or even for the same speaker on different occasions, when the intended meaning itself differs.[2]\nAkkawi (n.d.), citing al-Zarkashi's al-Burhān, defines al-taqdīm (foregrounding) as placing a thing in front of another (min qaddama al-shayʾ ay waḍaʿahu amāma ghayrihi), with al-taʾkhīr (backgrounding) as its opposite.[3] Al-Zarkashi is further cited describing it as one of the ways (asālīb) of eloquence (balāgha) that scholars employed as evidence of their command of clarity (faṣāḥa) and mastery of speech, and its command over them, having in the hearts the finest placement and sweetest taste.[3]",
