Arabic name

Arabic names used in the Encyclopedia may be of two types:

The designation Official Arabic name is reserved for an Arabic designation explicitly attested in a source and accompanied by a pinpoint citation to where that designation is attested.
The designation Arabic name is used where the Encyclopedia supplies a constructed Arabic designation for an annotation unit for which no source-attested Arabic designation has been established. No source citation is given for a constructed Arabic name.

The use of a constructed Arabic name does not imply that the annotation unit itself is an editorial construction. The taxonomic distinction represented by the annotation unit may be fully source-grounded even where the sources do not provide a formal Arabic designation for it. In other cases, the Encyclopedia may group source-attested linguistic operations into an editorially defined annotation unit for which no source-attested name exists. Terminological provenance and taxonomic provenance are therefore treated separately.
