A linguistic rhetorical action is a communicative action performed through language, rather than through non-linguistic means such as visual imagery, gesture, music, or other modes of communication. Within the Model for Rhetorical Action, it occurs when a communicator performs an identifiable Linguistic Operation which establishes or activates a Cognitive Relationship with an addressee, through which one or more communicative effects may be enhanced.
