Linguistic rhetorical action

A rhetorical action performed through language - rather than through non-linguistic means such as visual imagery, gesture, music, or other modes - in which a communicator uses an identifiable linguistic operation to establish or activate a cognitive relationship with an addressee and thereby produce a pragmatic rhetorical effect.
