A rhetorical device is an identifiable linguistic operation used within rhetorical action. Examples include Metaphor, Simile, Repetition, and Antithesis.
More specifically, within the Encyclopedia of Arabic Rhetoric and its Model for Rhetorical Action, a rhetorical device is the instrument of the Linguistic Operation Step: an identifiable linguistic action which establishes or activates a Cognitive Relationship between a communicator and an addressee, through which Communicative Enhancement may arise.
The Encyclopedia of Arabic Rhetoric currently catalogues 80 Arabic rhetorical devices attested within the Arabic rhetorical tradition (al-balāgha).
